Helping Children & Families Build Strong Relationships

The bond between a parent and child builds the child’s ability to form relationships with others, express emotions, and face difficult challenges. Young children recognize the type of care they receive from adults beginning at birth. They feel secure and protected when the adults in their lives show them that they care and demonstrate affection. Young children can explore the world, develop empathy, and understand the difference between right and wrong with the self-confidence that originates from nurturing early relationships. Caregivers play a vital role each day in building those connections. Childcare professionals can encourage parents by asking: How does your child communicate his/her needs? What are your routines? How do you support your child when she/he is frustrated or shows strong emotions? How do you foster your child’s relationships with others?

For more information on supporting social emotional growth in young children, explore the Center for Social and Emotional Foundations for Learning.

Bells and whistles and lights, oh my! The more the toy is doing, the less the child is learning. Children explore the world through play, figuring out how things work and how people think, feel, and act in different situations. Play also provides lots of practice in using language, telling stories, and solving problems. Toys that spark your little one’s imagination don’t need to cost a lot. In fact, you may already have some of the tried-and-true classics on hand. Learn three new ways to use a cardboard box.

Transitions, transitions, transitions! August is THE month for so many transitions for our kids. Research shows that young children in group settings can spend up to 2/3 of their day in transitions! No wonder they can be overwhelming sometimes. Learn more ways you can help support your kids through transitions.

Child Care Business Leadership Tips

Read on for some helpful tips to grow your business and leadership:

  • Leading By Inspiration-often you can be the one person in someone’s day that inspires them to do more, be open to more, and respond with more enthusiasm. Inspire On!

  • Become a Communication Ninja-why not spend just half a minute right now identifying one thing you could do better today in your communications than yesterday? And then make just one change. Don’t try to tackle them all at once or make it overwhelming.

  • Constant Flexibility-we never know what one minute, one hour or one day may bring us so staying flexible can be a gamechanger and lead to many positive outcomes.

  • Tackle Tasks with Innovation-we are creatures of habit and just because “we’ve always done it this way” doesn’t mean it’s the best way of doing it. Keep your approach fresh and creative!

  • Be Thankful, Be Approachable, Smile More-it goes a long way!
