Ms Nikki's Class - Early Preschool

Dear Early Preschool Families,

As you know, we have been studying literacy, so we have been working on reading words in our books. Knowledge of letters and words is an important component of literacy. While they may not actually be reading the words, children do recognize the shapes, placement, and flow of words they are seeing. They will often memorize how the word looks and can eventually tell you what it says. That is reading! Sometimes they pretend or play like they are reading. The skills children learn through purposeful, productive, high level play—skills in verbalization, vocabulary, language comprehension, problem solving, and using symbols—are foundational skills for all cognitive development.
