Ms Josy's Class - Infants

Hello, Infant Class Families!

Last month we focused on strengthening our whole body movements and building relationships; we will continue to focus on this in the coming months.

For the month of October, we will begin focusing on transitions and self-regulating. This month we are saying goodbye to two of our friends as they transition to a toddler classroom. Transitions are hard, so to help get us through tough transitions, we sing or hum a gentle tune and belly breathe.

Belly breathing is a practice from the Conscious Discipline style. Breathing helps our brain to tell our bodies to relax and move with the flow.

1. Sit or lie flat in a comfortable position.

2. Put one hand on your belly just below your ribs and the other hand on your chest.

3. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and let your belly push your hand out. ...

4. Breathe out through pursed lips as if you were whistling. ...

5. Do this breathing 3 to 10 times.

Something you can do at home that will help with transitions involves building new relationships and encourages self-regulation. This practice involves offering your baby a lovey when they’re upset to encourage them to self-soothe. A lovey can be any comfort item that may help your baby to take a deep breath (such as a blanket, binky, stuffed animal, etc.). It is important to respond to your baby’s need once you have offered them their lovey so they can begin to associate the safe feeling your response gives them to the physical presence of their lovey. As your baby grows and develops a love for this item, the lovey becomes important to them because they make a connection that this item makes them feel safe. It is important to embrace the self-regulation your baby practices with this lovey.

The weather is starting to change. Be sure to send some fall/winter clothing for your baby and have them dressed accordingly for our fickle fall days. We will go outside everyday unless the weather is unsafe.

Thank you so much for your attendance and communication!
